The Types of Beer: Pilseners and Ales

Beer is among the world’s most popular, as well as oldest, of beverages. Dating back even until 4000 BCE, the ancient Sumerians are known to have brewed their share of beer, simply establishing the historical roots of beer.

Beer is something really easy to make, with ingredients easy to acquire as well. Because of this nature, beer has been popular as a drink for a long time now.

Two of the most popular types of beer are Pilseners and Ales.

Ales have been pretty much around since the 14th century, and was quite popular during the Medieval Times. Ales were associated as a staple, along with the wide variety of bread which was around at that time, and was seen as the essential drink.

Today, Ales are quite popular in Germany, Ireland, Britain, Scotland and Belgium. It is basically a type of beer, brewed from barley malts and flavored with Hops. Ales have a bitter, herbal flavor tang to them. This flavor balances the malt sweetness, defining Ale as a type of beer. The more popular varieties of ale include Dark Ale, Pale Ale, Brown Ale, Cream Ale and German Ale.

Pilseners are another type of beer. It is basically a type of pale lager, and can be referred to a pilsner. It was developed in the City of Pilsen, Bohemia, which is today Plzen in the Czech Republic. Pilseners owe its name from its city of origin.

In 1839 the citizens of Pilsen set up a brewery of their own, taking on the “heed” of what lager beers had in them. This decision came to be after the standards of the then status-quo beer, which were dark and cloudy top-fermented beers, went from bad to worse.

The Burgess’ Brewery, the 1839 built brewery stood to live up to the Bavarian style of brewing beer. Caves, with their generally cool internal temperatures, were ideal for siring pilseners, which eventually became quite popular, eventually becoming a beer class of its own.

Pilseners boast quite a flavor, and are often the most sought after types of beers in the world. Modern advances in refrigeration made the production of Pilseners easier and much more convenient.

All in all, Pilseners and Ales truly rank to be superstar beer types.

The next time you get out to paint the town red, consider having Pilseners or Ales. Whatever conceptions you’ve had about them then are sure to change.
